Essential Questions/Theme Concepts(s):
What are some of the principles and elements of art?
What is the purpose of the principles of art?
What is the purpose of the elements of art?
How do artists use these concepts to create artwork?
NJCCS:
1.1, 1.1.5.D.1
Objectives:
Art Production Concepts(s):
Students will create a mixed media project that shows emphasis by using the letter of their first initial in their name onto a piece of metal. Students will also learn to use pattern, movement, color, shape, and line in their work of art effectively. Students will also learn how to patina a piece of metal once they are finished with their designs.
Creative & Critical Abilities, Skills Students will Enhance:
Students will use critical thinking while using planning skills on how they want to design their letter on the metal. Students will also be allowed to express their creativity by creating any designs they want.
Aesthetics, Art Criticism, Art, History:
Students will be introduced to works of art by Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O’ Keeffe, Mondrian, Escher, and Leonid Afremov. They will study how how the principles and elements of design were used in these works by looking at PowerPoint slides.
STEM Aspect:
Students will learn that molecules move faster when friction and heat is applied to them in metal. This causes the metal to change shape. Also discuss what a patina is when it occurs naturally. (On metal, patina is a coating of various chemical compounds such as oxides, carbonates, sulfides, or sulfates formed on the surface during exposure to atmospheric elements)
Activities
Day 1:
1) Students will walk in and be handed a piece of paper and work on their “Do Now”. The “Do Now” will be to write their names in bubble letters. While this is taking place attendance will be taken.
2) Students will be asked if they know any of the elements or principles of art. A brief discussion will take place to see what the students know or can remember from previous art classes.
3) Students will be asked to bring their chairs forward for a PowerPoint presentation on three elements of art and three principles of art. During this PowerPoint students will be shown examples of famous artwork that incorporates each concept. Teacher example will be shown at the end.
4) After the PowerPoint students will be asked to gather around the center of the room to be shown a demonstration on how to complete the project. Students will be informed of safety procedures and how to work with the metal in a safe proper way. Students will also be encouraged to sketch their ideas first before working on their metal pieces.
Day 2:
5) Students will enter the classroom and work on their “Do Now”. Their “Do Now” is to draw their own hand. Attendance will once again be taken during this time.
6)Students will be asked a brief review of the principles and elements of art and then review the procedure of the project.
7) Students will be shown a demonstration of how to ink their pieces of metal with india ink. This will give their pieces a patina look to them.
8)Students will continue to work on their project until class ends
Day 3:
10) Students will be handed back their work and will continue working on their projects.
11) As more students finish a brief demonstration will be shown on how to mat their work to a black piece of paper.
12) Assessment: Grading Rubric
