What is the STEAM Garden and how did it happen?
I attended the AENJ conference during the Fall of 2014 where I took a workshop with sand sculptor John Gowdy. At the beginning of his presentation he was explaining the science of sand...its origins, and its physical properties. He discussed the engineering behind sand sculptures both large and small. At that moment a STEAM lightbulb went off in my head. I started thinking about how I could share this with my students. After a lot of brainstorming and discussions with various people who are STEAM minded like me, I designed, developed, and wrote grants to create this alternative outdoor classroom located behind our greenhouse. It is used by Buzz Aldrin students and teachers to experience kinesthetic learning in Art, Science, Engineering, and Math.
THE STEAM GARDEN is a 12'x24' structure that holds sculptural sand...lessons include sculpture, physics, erosion labs, measuring/volume, and various engineering lessons.
We opened the STEAM Garden with a two day sand sculpture workshop for the Mount Hebron students featuring John Gowdy. John works all over the world creating amazing sculptures out of sand. Pictures from the workshop are below.
